| US ambassador: Bush administration will oppose Armenian bill |
|
U.S. Ambassador to Ankara Ross Wilson said on Wednesday that President George W. Bush would strongly oppose the recently introduced resolution on the so-called Armenian genocide. "The Bush Administration's position on this issue has not changed," he said in a written statement yesterday. "As I have said before, the Administration will be actively involved with the Congress to oppose this resolution," he stressed. With Democrats taking control of the U.S. Congress following their election victory late last year, prospects have increased that lawmakers will approve a resolution recognizing the World War I-era forced deportation and deaths of Armenians as genocide. U.S. sources say the Bush administration will actively oppose the bill but they also add they "cannot guarantee that the resolution does not get adopted." |
