FM Gül’s shocking questionDuring a recent visit to New York City, Turkish Foreign Minister Abdullah Gül sought to have the audience see national security matters from a Turkish perspective.
Speaking at the Foreign Policy Council in New York, Gül reminded participants of the flow of PKK members from Northern Iraq into Turkey and asked, “As the United States of America, would you accept it if there was a constant flow of terrorists from Mexico into the States?”
Later Gül was asked about article 301 of the Turkish Penal Code, under which a number of journalists and intellectuals have been charged with insulting “Turkishness” in recent years. The foreign minister said the law would be altered.
